In order to provide students with necessary soft skills before their graduation, the Viet Nam-United States Studies Corner cooperated with the Public Affairs Section, U.S Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City to hold a talk on writing effective resumes at 2 p.m on the 24th of October, 2013. The speaker was Ms. Anna Dupont, U.S. Consulate officer. Nearly 100 staff members, lectures and students from the University of Da Nang and other universities in Da Nang attended this talk.
Ms Ann posed the question: What is the purpose of a resume? Some students answered this question and she discussed with them. Then she touched upon its definition and its important characteristics, a writing process, a typical structure for a resume and identyfing information. In order to write an effective resume, candidates must underline the objective of writing a resume, use headings to highlight their particular areas of strength or experience, list the skills and the strengths that they have that are directly relevant to the position description, qualifications, education and work and experience. To help the students grasp what had been mentioned in her talk, Ms Anna gave the work sheet handouts to the participants and asked them to fill them in. In addition, Ms Anna talked about cover letters and the ways to write them as well as frequently asked questions. The students asked her a lot of interesting questions that showed their great interest in wring an effective resume and a cover letter so that they can be a successful candidate in the near future.
