Celebrating 32th anniversary of Vietnam Teachers' Day also marks the age of the twenties "full of sap" of UD. Twenty years, a not long period of time, but the University of Danang has made a miraculous phenomenon of development.
As a center of science, economics, technology, high-quality human resources training for key economic region of the Central, UD has made breakthrough steps to become a big training, scientific research and international cooperation hub of the country.
On this occasion, reporter of Education and Era journal made an interview with Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Van Nam – President of UD
Dear Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Van Nam, an education manager said that the 20 years stage of UD is a testament of leaps of Viet Nam higher education in era of innovation and integration. What is your opinion?
We are very happy and proud with this assertion. In past 20 years, education and training in general and higher education training in particular has made very important contribution to the dynamic role of this growth, with an increase in the scale and quality of education that meet timely increasing demand of human resources of society by constant innovation and efforts to surpassing integration.
These proud achievements are the results of a sound quality-oriented strategy based on innovation policy of the Party and State, especially the Resolution 29-NQ / TW on basic and comprehensive renovation in education and training... the different characteristics after 20 years of establishment and development of UD can be brief as follows:
*Regarding the organizational structure: At start-up in 1994, UD was a collection of 01 Da Nang University of Technology, 01 campus of Da Nang University of Foreign Languages and 01 Quang Nam-Da Nang College of Teacher Training and Technical School of Nguyen Van Troi.
UD is now a multi-level, multi-disciplinary university with organizational structure of a large-scale regional university. The original members now become leading and prestigious affiliated universities in the field of education that are University of Science and Technology, University of Economics, University of Foreign Languages Studies and University of Education. Besides, there are two units which are being rearranging to be University of Information Technology and University of Technical Pedagogy.
In addition, UD has a branch in Kon Tum, VN-UK Institute for Research and Executive, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, School of International Studies and Faculty of Physical Education, along with 23 research institutes and centers, education supporting and technology transfer centers. This organization scale expresses the ceaseless development of UD.
*Regarding staff: from 1,200 academic staff in 1994, UD now has nearly 2,300 managing staff, teaching staff and teaching support staff. In particular, the number of teaching staff having postgraduate qualifications makes up to 85%, in which 290 staff holding doctor degree, increases 5 times compared with 1994, the number of professors and associate professors increases 10 times. The majority of staff is trained in renowed institutions overseas and many of whom are leading experts in their industry.
*About the scale of training: Along with the increase of the demand for higher education of society in the Central Region - Highland, the training scale of UD is increasing rapidly.
In 1994, UD had about 25,000 students and this number is now more than 75,000 students, up to 5 times, especially the increase in the number of graduate and PhD students.
Currently, UD is an annual destination of 3,500 graduate students in 32 majors and 170 PhD students in 17 majors.
*In terms of scientific research: in 1994, scientific research activities were mainly small-scale activities serving for teaching and publication in internal journals once in 6 months. Up to date, more than 200 international articles are published each year, performing approximately 250 research projects and revenue of technology transfer, manufacture contract is approximately 30 billion/year. UD has 3 specialized scientific journals and publishes 40 volumes with almost 1,000 articles annually.
*In terms of international cooperation: In 1994, UD cooperation partners were mainly in Eastern Europe and France. It now has cooperation agreements with more than 170 universities of 45 countries and territories in all continents.
So, after 20 years, UD has actually become a key hub for training, scientific research and international cooperation of the Central and the country.
Today, UD is flourishing to become a research - oriented university and reaching the top 100 universities in Asia.

Would you please to tell us the steps and the results of UD in training human resources to meet the needs of society?
We are living in the flat world and the international integration is happening very strong so the most important policy of our university is toward international standards.
In training, we emphasize on the application of advanced training programs of foreign universities and implementation of training programs accreditation by international repute accreditation organizations.
UD has many years of importing and delivering program of Digital system of the University of Washington (USA), Embedded System program of the University of Portland (USA), program of Automation, Industrial Informatics of Grenoble Institute of Technology (France), Information Technology program of the University of Luminy (France) and Monash University (Australia), or Business Administration of University of Sunderland (UK)...
Successful deployment of these programs contributes to the increase of high quality human resources and has large pervasiveness to renew the curriculum throughout the university.
We have 3 engineering training programs accredited and recognized by the Commission des Titres d'Ingenieur and is developing accreditation for other programs at AUN standard of Asian University Network.
The training programs are accredited and recognized by the international organizations that also mean that human resources from these programs will meet the employer's standards internally and internationally.
Proof can be stated that almost 100% of UD students of international programs have found a job at the renowned multinational corporations such as Intel, Microsoft, Toyota, Bosch, Doosan... or large companies in Viet Nam such as Viet Nam Oil and Gas Corporation, Truong Hai Automobile, FPT, Viettel ...
In scientific research, we encourage and support staff to have opportunity to study, research and publish articles in international journals.
Currently, we have 358 staff to study abroad each year and nearly 200 articles are published in the conference proceedings and international journals.
The action program of the government as well as the action plan for basic and comprehensive innovation in education and training emphasize on quality assurance, teaching staff development and management innovation. Could you please to post general evaluation in managing staff and teaching staff of UD?
- In order to assess the UD’s cadre, I can proudly say that they are methodically educated with good morality, having dedicative, dynamic, creative characteristics and always fulfill tasks excellently.
It must be take a long process of struggle, pass a system of selection to be staff of UD. They will be facilitate to continuous learning to improve their professional skills abroad, be self-fostering, exchange with national and international scientists, managers. The majority has the knowledge, skills and work well.
The first qualification to become a faculty of UD is excellent degree at renowned national and international universities. Next, they need to get master and doctorate’s degree at foreign university (only a few special disciplines to be trained domestically) and after backing to work, they will continuously conduct collaborative research and teaching with overseas universities.
Therefore, the majority of UD faculty can communicate in foreign languages, has modern way of thinking and working style. Staff is the most precious resource that UD has been developed after 20 years and is the most important precondition for us to move forward confidentially in the years to come.
What conditions that UD will prepare for a new development in the coming years according to research-oriented University?
We focus on the following key tasks:
First, continuing to innovate and improve the organizational structure and operational mechanism in the direction of maximizing autonomy, creativity, self-responsibility of the affiliated units and individuals.
Each affiliated unit, each individual must have favorable environment to maximize capacity, intellectual to contribute to the overall success of the university.
Second, continued training and fostering staff to increase the proportion of teaching staff that hold doctoral qualifications, particularly PhD graduated from prestigious universities in the world. In particular, we focus on discovery, attracting and fostering the leading specialists in each field
Third, strengthening international cooperation to strongly develop international programs and scientific research, look for common projects.
Deploying curriculums which reach international standards and are accredited by international organizations, developing VN-UK Institute for Research and Executive to become VN-UK International University.
Fourth, creating favorable environment for staff to do scientific research and apply research findings into practice; establishing center network, teaching research teams and especially international research centers with the participation of world leading scientists.
Fifth, continuing to renovate, upgrade and supplement infrastructure and facilities; standardizing classrooms, laboratories and offices to best meet the requirements of research, teaching and learning.
