In the afternoon of December 16th , 2014 the delegation from Indiana State University (ISU), USA led by Prof. Paul Quang Duong Tran – Chair and Professor of Social Work Department – College of Nursing, Health and Human Service, ISU visited and worked with the University of Danang (UD). In the delegation, there were also Prof. Christopher Neil McGrew – Director, Center for Global Engagement, ISU; Prof. Brian T.Kilp – Professor of Horn, School of Music, ISU.
At UD’s side, there were Assoc. Prof. Ngô Văn Dưỡng – Vice President of UD; MA. Hồ Lộng Ngọc – Vice Director of International Cooperation Department, UD; Dr. Phan Thế Phước Long – Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, UD; Dr. Nguyễn Bá Trung – Vice Head of Science, International Cooperation Office, University of Education, UD; Dr. Hoàng Nam Hải – Dean of Faculty of Primary Education; MA. Nguyễn Thị Nguyệt – Vice Dean of Faculty of Educational Psychology; Mr. Trương Quang Minh Đức – Leader of Musical Team, Faculty of Political Education; Ms. Đinh Thị Thu Hằng – Faculty of Primary and Kindergarten Educationand other relevant officers.
At the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Ngô Văn Dưỡng briefly introduced about framework of organization as well as training programs of all member universities of UD. Especially, Vice President Ngô Văn Dưỡngalso presented research cooperation programs that have been conducted between UD and other foreign universities
Responding to the question from senior representatives of UD about framework of organization and training program at ISU, Prof. Paul Quang Duong Tran briefly introduced about ISU. It is known that ISU is one of the multi – disciplinary, multi –level universities in USA. ISU was established in 1865 and estimated as one of the best quality universities in fields of teaching and doing scientific research. ISU offers more than 80 undergraduate majors such as: Accounting, Adult and Career Education, Art Education, Automotive Engineering Technology, Biology, Business Administration, Civil Engineering Technology, Communication, Health Sciences, Music Education... ISU is also the first public university in Indiana to require incoming freshmen to have a laptop. Besides, ISU offers Lenovo ThinkPad T430u laptops to incoming freshmen with high school GPAs of 3.0 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) as part of its Laptop Initiative. In addition, ISU is a member of the College Consortium of Western Indiana. This membership allows students who are full-time at their home institution to take classes at the other member institutions of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. In addition, the number of its students is nearly 15.000. ISU has 7 affiliations: College of Arts and Sciences; Bayh College of Education; Graduate and Professional Studies; College of Nursing, Health and Human Services; Scott College of Business; College of Technology; University College. Besides, ISU also has sport clubs for students such as: basketball, volleyball, cross-country, track and field, football, golf, baseball...
Following the introduction of Prof. Paul Quang Duong Tran, Prof. Brian Thomas Kilp – Lecturer at School of Music, ISU also presented briefly about musical training program. According to Prof. Brian Thomas Kilp, besides studying professional majors, students at School of Music have to participate in some different majors such as: foreign language, marketing, ethics, psychology, business, history....The purpose of this training program is to help students have an overview about all aspects in the world as well as have enough wide and deep knowledge to improve their skills, their thinking to get achievements in their life and career.
In the meeting. Dr. Phan Thế Phước Long showed that Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, UD was established 5 years ago, therefore, at present, the faculty is lack of well- experienced lecturers and facilities. Dr. Phan Thế Phước Long hopes to establish the cooperation with College of Nursing, Health and Human Service, ISU to receive more support from ISU. Besides, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy is willing to cooperate with ISU to not only open training program in the field of Nursing but also receive ISU’s professors to teach for lecturers and student at Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, especially, collaborate to find funds from Vietnamese government or Europe to support lecturers and student at Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, UD.
MA. Nguyễn Thị Nguyệt hopes to cooperate with Social Work Department – College of Nursing, Health and Human Service, ISU to open short – term or long – term courses to improve knowledge for lecturers of Educational Psychology Faculty, University of Education, UD as well as send lecturers to study or do research at Social Work Department – College of Nursing, Health and Human Service, ISU. Besides, MA. Nguyễn Thị Nguyệt also emphasized that Educational Psychology Faculty, University of Education, UD is willing to receive 10-15 students from Social Work Department, ISU to study and exchange information with her students.
Mr. Trương Quang Minh Đức presented that Musical Team of Political Education Faculty, University of Education, UD just has a 3 –year training course. At present, Musical Team is under the process of finishing the 4 – year training project in the field of Musical Education to submit to the Ministry of Education and Training for approval. Therefore, Mr. Trương Quang Minh Đức hopes to receive positive supports from School of Music, ISU. Besides, Musical Team of Political Education Faculty, University of Education hopes to cooperate with School of Music to organize some Music Performances with the aim of exchanging experience and updating useful skills between UD’s students and ISU’s students.
Responding the above suggestions, Prof. Quang Duong Tran acknowledged teaching and research proposals of UD and expressed his willingness to cooperate with UD. Besides, Prof. Paul Quang Duong Tran also emphasized that he will submit all UD’s proposals to the presidential board of ISU and hope that cooperation and support for UD’s students in studying and doing research will be strengthened in the future.
At the end of the meeting, Prof. Paul Quang Duong Tran expressed his thanks to UD for the warm welcome and hopes that cooperative programs in training and scientific research between the two universities will develop steadily.
