From March 8 to March 16, 2012, the delegation of the University of Danang (UD) including Assoc. Prof. Tran Van Nam – President of UD, Assoc. Prof. Ngo Kim Hung – Rector of Danang University of Technology, Mr. Duong Mong Ha – Director of Quality Assurance Department, and Dr. Pham Van Tuan – Vice Director of Center for Excellent paid a visit to the United Kingdom (UK). The main purpose of this visit is to attend the Going Global 6 which British Council held in London. On this occasion, the delegation visited some universities in order to develop the bilateral cooperation, and lobby universities in UK participating in a project to establish an internationally standard Vietnam-UK University in Danang. The trip is invited and supported by the British Council in Vietnam.
Signing agreement with the University of Leeds (UL)
Before attending the Going Global 6, the delegation of the University of Danang visited the University of Leeds on March 9 and 10, 2012. UL is high ranked in UK and around the world, which specialized in Electrics ranked first and Computer ranked tenth of the UK. Although the visit was made on weekend, Prof. David Hogg – Vice President of the University of Leeds, Prof. Peter Jimack – Dean of School of Engineering, Dr. Andrew Bulpitt – Director of Training Department, Dr. Des McLemon – Director of Postgraduate training Department warmly welcomed the delegation and discussed about the possibility of the cooperation. The delegation visited the facilities and equipment, especially the laboratories professional in Electrical, Electronics and Computer. End of the visit, Assoc. Prof. Tran Van Nam and Prof. David Hogg signed an agreement of cooperation between UD and UL, initially focus on promoting research programs and postgraduate training. The University of Danang is one of few universities in Southeast Asia which the University of Leeds chooses to be priority partner in the strategy to develop its international cooperation. Therefore, the University of Leeds will consider in receiving graduates of specialized technologies at the University of Danang to study the postgraduate programs at the University of Leeds. Depending on the capacity of students through academic performance and live interview, the University of Leeds can accept bachelor’s degree students to transfer to doctoral degree students without following master courses. UL also considers partial scholarship by reducing tuition fee to support potential students. This is an opportunity for staff and students of engineering at UD can reduce time and money in learning Doctoral programs at a university in the UK. The interview for Doctoral programs may begin in September 2012 when Prof. David Hogg goes to Danang to lecture in Sterling Group program. Both sides will continue to discuss about Doctoral training program under framework of sandwich programs, accordingly students receiving scholarship from 911 Project can study some courses in UL and some courses in UD.
Signing cooperative agreement with the University of Northampton (UN).
At the invitation of leaders from University of Northampton, on the way returning to London for attending Going Global 6, the delegation paid a working visit to the University of Northampton on Saturday and Sunday (March 10-11, 2012). Prof. Ian Brooks, Dean of Northampton Business School, Director of International Programs, the University of Northampton along with other senior leaders warmly welcomed the delegation from UD to have the first formal visit to UN. Two sides continued the discussion to develop cooperative ideas raised in UN’s visit to UD last February, 2012. At the same time, the two sides signed a memorandum of agreement and its details are as follows:
- Cooperate to open joint programs in MBA, Master in Bank and Finance at UD;
- Final year students of UD would be considered to transfer to UN for study and get bachelor‘s degree issued by UN;
- Students graduated from UD would be considered a transfer for master study in UN;
- Two sides explored to open cooperative programs relating to technology science, business and other areas;
- Two sides cooperated to develop co-research projects, staff and student exchange programs.
The University of Northampton is located in Milton Keynes and just about 100 kilometers from London. After overall plan, the University of Northampton is more beautiful, prestigious and “easy to live”. Accordingly, students after graduating from UD could follow master’s courses in UN with only one year duration and 15,000 pound per year for cost of living expense.
Attending Going Global 6
Going Global, international education conferences, is held every year thanks to British Council’s initiative. This conference is a good opportunity for senior leaders, education policy makers to discuss issues relating to education, especially global high education. Since 2010, UD has been regularly invited to attend this Going Global, in Hongkong in 2011 and in London 2012. Going Global 6 was organized at International Conference Center called Queen Elizabeth II which is located at the heart of London with more than 1,500 participants from 60 countries. The delegation from Vietnam included 14 representatives from Ministry of Education and Training, Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs and there were 4 among Vietnam’s delegates from UD. In the morning of March 13, 2012, before the Going Global 6 was officially opened, a seminar especially for Vietnam with topic of “Vietnam-Land of Opportunity” had been co-chaired by Ms. Pham Thi Hai Chuyen, Minister, Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs; Mr. Tran Quang Quy, Vice Minister, Ministry of Education and Training and Mr. Robin Ricard, Director, British Council. This seminar aimed to introduce the policies of Vietnam regarding to develop higher education and professional work force, enhance cooperation with UK universities and present the project of international standard Vietnam-UK University’s establishment in Danang. This seminar attracted the attendance of many representatives from UK universities, entrepreneurs with interesting and fruitful discussions.
In the March 13th, 2012, the Global Going 6 was officially opened with the overall session and continued with the parallel seminars in the subsequent days.
During the conference, the delegation of UD has attended the overall activities and some special activities for Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam delegation, led by Vice Minister Tran Quang Quy. The details of these activities will be updated in the next articles.
