In the afternoon of April 24,2012, within the framework of working visit to Danang city, Mr. Le Thanh An, the U.S.Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City had a talk and discussion exchange with students of the University of Danang. Main topic of the talk wasthe job of a diplomat and interesting personal stories of being the first Vietnamese-American Consul General in the homeland.The talks attracted the participation of more than 80 students and staff.
Mr. Le Thanh An was the seventh of a family of nine children in the family. In 1965, at the age of 10, he left Vietnam to follow his aunt to the U.S. In 1975, he was the third year student in Electrical Engineering of the George Washington University in Washington, DC.
Mr. Le Thanh An has been involved in foreign diplomacy on behalf of the United States in many countries such as China, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, KoreaandFrance.
The students really enjoyed the meetingwith the Consul General and had a chance to better understand interesting contents such as: the difference between an embassy and a consulate; career change in the U.S; important qualities of a good diplomat etc.
The U.S.Consul General left the students with much encouragement and motivation. Especially, he advised students of Foreign Languages to use English in their daily communication to improve their English language proficiency.
