The University of Danang hosted the 23rd National Conference on Fluid Mechanics: Reducing CO2 emissions, rationally operating water reservoirs to prevent floods

On the morning of November 7, 2020, the University of Danang (UD) has just hosted the 23rd National Conference on Hydromechanical Mechanics. The event brought  together more than 30 scientists, lecturers, researchers, graduate students and representatives of relevant agencies.

Panorama of the Conference at UD

This was a scientific event of national stature, annually organized by the Vietnam Association for Fluid Mechanics, under which this year, it was the 5th time that UD was honored to be selected as the host.

However, due to the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as natural disasters, the Conference was changed to online format at 03 points: Ha Noi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu  - President of UD

Addresses the opening remarks

Speaking at the opening session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Vu - UD's President welcomed the Conference and highly appreciated the significance of the activities of the Vietnam Association of Fluid Mechanics.

The President of UD expressed his belief that the Conference's research results would make an important contribution, orient the Fluid Mechanics and related science and technology fields to continue to develop, serve effectively and respond to the demand for socio-economic development of the country.

Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Hung,

University of Science and Technology – UD speaks

At UD, under the co-chair of Prof. Dr. Sc. Bui Van Ga, Prof. Dr. Tran Van Nam and Prof. Dr. Nguyen The Hung, 13 scientific reports were presented in sessions with new, urgent and topical research issues  not only at the local or national level but also global level:

(1) Reducing emissions of gases causing "greenhouse effect", especially in transportation;

(2) Preventing natural disasters and floods through rational operation and regulation of water reservoirs.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Tran Thanh Hai Tung - UD

reports the scientific topic

The reports under the topic group (1) provided forecasts for the development of electric car technology and the use of alternative and renewable fuels (Biogas, Ethanol, LPG, HHO, etc.) to improve efficiency and reduce the deflation of waste pollution.

UD's GATEC group reported new research results on using renewable fuels, hybrid energy, battery power and hydrogen fuel cells to replace traditional fuels.

This was suitable with the world's trend of engine development, ensuring a roadmap to cut emissions of greenhouse gases. GATEC group's future vehicle type forecasts were the basis and orientation for policy makers, automobile and motorcycle manufacturers to refer to, and to come up with appropriate development strategies.

Dr. To Thuy Nga, Faculty of Construction of Water Works,

University of Science and Technology-UD discussed

One (2) rather "topical" topic that attracts a lot of attention, research and discussion of scientists was  that there were still differences in the management and operation of reservoirs in localities in the Central region, which can affect flooding situation in the downstream area.

Survey results and studies showed that, in some places there were effectively regulation and prevent flood, but in some other places there were still inappropriate in regulation reservoir water. It is necessary to focus on improving the capacity of the contingent of agencies managing, operating and regulating reservoirs, etc.

There are many solutions to cope with

the flood problem in the Central region

The scientific reports at UD proposed to develop the flooding maps (detailed to commune and ward levels for small river basins, mountainous areas and large river basins with large reservoir systems), install more hydrological monitoring stations and provide update online data which would increase proactivity in responding to floods in time, etc.

With 75 scientific articles in the field of hydro-mechanics and many related fields (environment, climate change adaptation, industrial hydropower, "smart" machinery development, etc.), in which 24 reports presented at 03 points of the Conference, 51 "online" reports on the website of Vietnam Association for Fluid Mechanics, the 23rd National Conference was a great success.

With the role and important contribution of scientists of UD, with many works and research results having scientific and practical significance, the success of the Conference was the occasion for the scientists not only to exchange ideas, publish research results and share experiences but also contribute, offer solutions and criticize many urgent issues for the sustainable development of the country.
