Local education programmes on climate 2024

The University of Danang (UD) and its member universities have all developed Climate Action Plans, ensuring consistency between the university's strategy and unit-level actions.

University of Science and Education (UD) advanced its commitment to local education and climate action on July 11, 2024, by launching two initiatives in Dien Ban District, Quang Nam Province, centered on sustainable resource management and biodiversity conservation.

The first program  involves the transfer of technology for producing dishwashing liquid from food waste and essential oils. This initiative serves as a practical educational tool, demonstrating how to mitigate climate change through waste reduction and the circular economy. By converting food byproducts into useful goods, the program educates the community on sustainable consumption, resource efficiency, and the reduction of landfill waste, which is a significant source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. This hands-on approach provides a tangible example of how local actions can contribute to broader climate change mitigation efforts.

The second initiative focuses on training and raising awareness about legal frameworks for wildlife protection. This program educates the public on the importance of biodiversity and the legal consequences of poaching and illegal wildlife trade. By fostering a greater understanding of the critical role of wildlife in maintaining healthy ecosystems, this program supports climate change adaptation and impact reduction. Healthy ecosystems are more resilient to the impacts of climate change, and protecting wildlife is a key component of preserving this resilience. These training sessions and community events serve as an educational platform to promote the message that biodiversity conservation is integral to addressing the climate crisis.

Many academic activities have been implemented to raise awareness and research capacity on climate adaptation, such as the 9th International Conference on "Application of New Technologies in Green Buildings" (ATiGB 2024) organized by the University of Technology and Education - UD, attracting over 300 domestic and international scientists, aiming to apply new technologies in sustainable construction and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The University of Economics - The University of Danang has also taken specific steps: organizing international conferences on climate change to mobilize ideas and cooperation in implementing climate response projects.

The 5th Conference on "Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Development in the Central - Central Highlands Region" (2024), organized by the University of Science and Education - UD in coordination with the Da Nang Union of Science and Technology Associations and the GreenViet Biodiversity Conservation Centre (GreenViet), aims to promote solutions for marine conservation, ecosystem protection, and sustainable development of biodiversity in the Central - Central Highlands region.

In addition, UD affirms its pioneering role in education, raising awareness, and building institutional capacity for Climate Action through a research and innovation strategy linked to practice. The university not only integrates climate change knowledge into its curriculum but also promotes breakthrough research projects, creating mitigation and adaptation solutions with high application value.

A typical example is the GATEC research group (Gas and Alternative Technology Research Group) at the Da Nang University of Science and Technology - UD, a pioneering scientific collective active since 1995, specializing in Biogas engines, Hydrogen, and green energy technology to cut CO2 emissions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. GATEC has created a strong research and technology transfer ecosystem, with over 11 recognized Patents and Utility Solution Patents. The group's works have been applied in practice in the Central - Central Highlands region, helping to reduce environmental pollution and save energy costs. Key research directions include retrofitting traditional engines to run on flexible gas fuels and developing Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems (HRES) combining biomass – solar energy – wind energy.

In addition, lecturers and students from the University of Science and Technology also initiated the 5R-Tech technology company, a pioneer in the field of recycling solar panels with an efficiency of up to 90%. This activity directly addresses the problem of hazardous electronic waste and promotes a circular economy, affirming the link between education, research, and solving society's practical climate challenges.

Thus, within the framework of SDG 13.3.1, the University of Danang not only implements policies, training programs, enhances faculty capacity, and assesses outcomes, but also ensures that every member university has specific action plans and commitments consistent with the university's overall strategy.
