According to Mrs. Ann Marie Yastishock, Director of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Vietnam, the USAID's goal in supporting Vietnam is to modernize the higher education system to create highly skilled workforce who are fully equipped with necessary elements to meet the needs of a rapidly modernizing economy and an increasingly competitive global market.

The USAID's higher education support program focuses on three areas that Vietnam prioritizes: science and technology, medicine, and liberal arts.

The three major Vietnamese universities receiving this support include Vietnam National University - Hanoi, Vietnam National University - HCMC and the University of Danang. The Partnership for Higher Education Project will support these educational institutions to become world-class universities. The project will implement activities to achieve three goals: enhancing sustainability and autonomy, improving quality of academic training, and strengthening research and innovation capacity of these universities.

The project will coordinate with Vietnamese authorities to research and review the current higher education policy environment, thereby supporting further reforms. The project not only benefits 150,000 students of these three universities but also the higher education sector in general.
