USAID Partnership for Higher Education Reform Project at the University of Danang: Gender equality and women empowerment in education and research

 

On the morning of May 7, within the framework of the USAID Partnership for Higher Education Reform Project (PHER) of the University of Danang (UD), UD organized a technical support session on “Gender equality and women empowerment in education and research”.

Attending the event were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Quang Son – UD Vice President; Dr. Nguyen Thi Van - Vice Rector of University of Labor and Social Affairs, Director of the Center for Training and Fostering Labor and Social Officials and Civil Servants - Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs; Ms. Phuong To Tam - PHER Project Management Board.

Also attending were representatives of UD's affiliated units: Committee for the Advancement of Women; Party Committee Office; Trade Union standing committee; Head of the Women's Affairs Committee, Trade Union of UD and UD’s member universities and affiliated units; Representatives of relevant departments (ODA Project Management, Science and International Cooperation).

Vice President Le Quang Son delivered the opening remark

Speaking at this Technical Session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Quang Son - Vice President of UD emphasized the role of gender equality and women's empowerment in education and research because this was the potential that needs to be respected and promoted, "the power to change human life and build the future of humanity".

In the context of having many challenges that need to be faced and taking advantage of opportunities to adapt and overcome, women have the power of knowledge and enthusiasm that is shaped and motivated by equality, justice can become typical individuals and communities in society.

Vice President Le Quang Son highlighted the significance of the technical session, which was not only a thematic training activity in the series of events of the PHER Project but also a commitment and accompaniment to join hands in creating and improving the environment of learning, research and creativity, equality in gender and position, equality in opportunities for development and advancement.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Van-Vice Rector of University of Labor and Social Affairs, Director of the Center for Training and Fostering Labor-Social Officials and Civil Servants-Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, it was necessary to focus on harmony between knowledge and understanding of gender and gender equality associated with creating an equitable working, learning, and research environment.

Along with that, experts shared and guided skills in applying the SAGER model on gender equality in academia and related activities, thereby raising awareness of gender equality and empowering women in education and research.

Joining hands to create and improve an equal environment of learning, research, and creativity

At the training and discussion sessions, delegates shared and exchanged oriented content, suggestions, and advice from experts, focusing on the concepts of gender equality; The meaning of gender equality and women's empowerment from the perspective of international experience, applied appropriately to the practical conditions of UD.

Delegates proposed ideas, comments, and policy consultations on implementing gender equality effectively, following development policies, especially in higher education, to keep up with trends in the integration and globalization process.

Discussion session

The results from the Technical Session held at UD were the basis to reduce prejudice, remove barriers, and clear bottlenecks in the face of inadequacies that may arise in the increasingly real world that many women participated extensively and actively in research and educational activities.

Raising awareness about gender equality and empowering women in the field of education and research

Previously, within the framework of the PHER Project, UD also successfully organized technical support sessions on the training program monitoring system and educational quality assurance; upholding the spirit of scientific integrity and research ethics in academia.

Through these support sessions, UD’s member universities, and affiliated units had more opportunities to access experts and exchange with domestic and international universities; Enhance autonomy and management capacity, serve strategic development goals, improve the quality of training and scientific research, innovation and international integration, business cohesion and cooperation and community for sustainable development.
