The University of Danang held the online workshop on “Innovation-oriented university – Quality management and brand development”

On September 18, the University of Danang (UD) organized the online workshop on “Innovation-oriented university – Quality management and brand development” with the main speaker was Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Duc, former Vice President of the Vietnam National University (VNU) – Hanoi, Head of Advisory Group – National Committee on Education and Training Innovation.

The workshop drew the participation of leader representatives from the UD’s Board of President, functional departments, member universities, affiliated units as well as approximately 100 lecturers, academic staff.

At the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Quang Son – the UD’s Vice President, highlighted the importance of the workshop’s theme, thereby emphasizing the role and trend of innovation-oriented university as well as the requirements of quality management and brand development for universities’ sustainable development.

For his part, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Duc introduced and analyzed issues about the process of developing the advanced university governance in the world. The Professor generally evaluated the Vietnamese universities’ situation on different aspects: experience-based management, management of objectives (from VNU-Hanoi’s experience), management of development perspectives, management of context which is adaptable to the 4th Industrial Revolution (V-SMART model), digital transformation management, etc.

Professor Duc also focused on sharing his own experience in university ranking and rating, thereby introducing the UPM (University Performance Metrics) system which is a rating one proposed and run by the VNU-Hanoi’s research team, funded and sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Training.

According to this system, Vietnamese universities are ranked by 4 indicators (scope of international publications, average articles per lecturer, average citations per article and internal research, of which each indicator has its own rating and “star” (from 1-5) based on 54 criteria of 8 categories (strategy governance, education, research, innovation, innovation ecosystem, IT and digital resources, internationalization, social engagement).

Through the workshop, the leaders, managing officials, lecturers and staff of the UD had the opportunity to share, exchange knowledge and experience about the trend of innovation-oriented university governance and development, which helped them to have ground to define their institutions’ brand and prestige, as well as continuously improve and implement development strategies that are adaptable to the context of international higher education integration in the 4th Industrial Revolution.
