International academic exchange contributes to research on preserving culture and history with the identity of the Mekong sub-region

On May 14th, 2025, the University of Science and Education - University of Danang (UD) organized an academic exchange program on research on preserving culture and history with Udon Thani Rajabhat University, Thailand.

The event was part of the project titled “Research on the Srikotaboon Civilization and its Socio-Cultural Values for Socio-Economic Development”, aiming to foster academic exchange and collaboration among universities in the Mekong subregion.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Văn Hiếu - Vice Rector of UED - UD, the program served as a platform to connect scholars, experts, and researchers in joint scientific efforts to preserve and promote the cultural and historical values of both countries within ASEAN. It also embodied the spirit of open and creative academic exchange towards sustainable development.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Teerayut Pengchai, Vice Rector of Udon Thani Rajabhat University, emphasized that the research project bridges the past and the future through academic and cultural exchange.

Representatives from the partner university highly appreciated Danang's strategic geopolitical location and its rich cultural heritage rooted in the ancient Champa civilization, which holds significant archaeological and historical value. These transnational cultural ties in the Mekong subregion, when explored through university collaboration, open opportunities to contribute to sustainable tourism and cultural development.

The highlight of the program was the presentation of Mr. Vo Van Thang - former Director of the Cham Sculpture Museum with lecturers of the University of Science and Education - UD on interdisciplinary cooperation in fields such as archaeology, heritage conservation education, ecosystems for community development.

Dr. Aphirak Loykaew from Udon Thani Rajabhat University presented new findings and approaches in interdisciplinary research on the Srikotaboon civilization (6th - 10th centuries AD), an ancient cultural center located in Northeastern Thailand.

Throughout the program, scholars, lecturers, and researchers shared knowledge and scientific outcomes on topics including archaeological studies, tangible and intangible cultural heritage preservation, and tourism development based on indigenous cultures.

Both sides agreed on further strengthening cooperation through field surveys, interdisciplinary research initiatives, co-hosting international and inter-university conferences, as well as publishing and sharing academic works related to education and tourism inspired by the cultural heritage of the Mekong subregion.
