The University of Danang - University of Economics held a National Scientific Seminar themed "Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on businesses - Perspective from the Central Region"

On October 23, The University of Danang - University of Economics (UD-DUE) in collaboration with Nha Trang University and Economic Science Association of Da Nang city held a National Science Seminar with the theme: "Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on businesses - Perspectives from the Central region".

Attending the Online Seminar were Assoc.Prof.Dr. Le Quang Son - Vice President of UD; Prof.Dr. Truong Ba Thanh - Chairman of the Economic Science Association of Da Nang City; Assoc.Prof.Dr. Vo Thi Thuy Anh - Vice Rector of UD-DUE; Dr. Cao Tri Dung - Chairman of Danang Tourism Association.

Also attending were representatives of leaders of nearly 100 enterprises and associations in many fields and industries of the Central region; representatives of leaders, scientists, lecturers of faculties and subjects (Faculty of Business Administration, UD-DUE; Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Tourism-Nha Trang University).

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Vo Thi Thuy Anh - Vice Rector of UD-DUE welcomed and thanked the participation of delegates from associations, businesses, universities, thereby connecting managers, administrators, enterprises, scientists with lecturers together to exchange, orient and propose solutions to create "breakthroughs as a push for businesses to overcome challenges and difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic".

Vice Rector Vo Thi Thuy Anh expressed her wish that scientists and lecturers of UD-DUE - which with its role and mission of being a center for training, scientific research, consulting and policy criticism leaders in the socio-economic fields - would continue to actively accompany businesses in researching and anticipating problems arising during and after COVID-19 pandemic; proposing appropriate solutions and recommendations on the basis of science and practice in order to contribute to promoting the restoration of production and business, recovery of growth and attraction of investment.

At the Seminar, representatives of businesses shared and analyzed from their objective reality with many difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic that heavily affected the existence and prospects of businesses’ recovery such as: the broken supply chain in production and business (Hoa Tho Textile & Garment Joint Stock Corporation); the inadequacies and difficulties in organization of the model of “producing, eating, staying at the company" (Long Sinh Company); the pressure on shortage of human resources due to the pandemic (Central Seaproducts Import-Export Corporation), etc.

In the field of tourism, businesses in Da Nang city faced many unprecedented challenges (more than 90% of tourism businesses had to temporarily close, more than 80% of tourism workers had to change occupations, facing the risk of unemployment), Dr. Cao Tri Dung - Chairman of Danang Tourism Association said.

The delegates discussed, analyzed, identified the current situation and shared experiences, immediate and long-term solutions to the problem of helping businesses in the Central region overcome the challenges of the pandemic. According to that, in the context of the complicated development of the COVID-19 pandemic, the goverment and businesses need to continue to focus on ensuring the safety and health of employees and implementing synchronous and effective pandemic prevention and control measures.

Along with that, businesses had set up orientations and strategies in line with reality and proposed solutions such as: Continuously searching for potential markets to maintain production, ensuring jobs for workers; restructuring to streamline the management and operation system, thereby saving costs (Dr. Vuong Vinh Hiep, General Director of Long Sinh Company, Nha Trang); Focusing on corporate governance and innovation, internal communication and attaching importance to the three pillars of human resources-customers-finance (Director of BQ Footwear Company-Mr. Phan Hai) or proposing to promote the spirit of effort, creativity, decisiveness in restoring production and consumption markets, creating confidence in businesses (MA. Tran Nhu Thien My-General Director of Central Seaproducts Import-Export Corporation), etc.

Focusing on restructuring enterprises; drastically in digital transformation and application of 4.0 technology to innovation in operation and production; proactively forecasting, building scenarios to not be passive to all situations, thereby finding opportunities to adapt and overcome the pandemic, that was a lesson learned and shared by MA. and criticizing socio-economic policies

 

Scientists and lecturers from UD-DUE shared and highly appreciated the efforts of businesses as well as the right guidelines and decisions in pandemic prevention and control of the government and localities and  at the same time offered suggestions to increase supports in terms of mechanisms and policies in order to facilitate  businesses growth

Enterprises need to be supported to reduce taxes,  interest rates, extend debt, help small and medium sized enterprises access to capital to restore production and business, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Truong Son - Dean of Faculty of Business Administration, UD-DUE emphasized. For each specific field such as tourism, hotel business, textiles, seafood processing, etc., enterprises in the Central region need to harmoniously combine interests, ensure safety and care for employees, customers and focus on innovation to improve the quality of products and services, etc.
