UD-DUT hosts international seminar on advanced technologies for landslide risk assessment, early warning and disaster prevention

On July 17, 2026, the University of Danang - University of Science and Technology (UD-DUT) hosted an international seminar on advanced SAR/InSAR and LiDAR technologies for landslide risk assessment, early warning, and disaster prevention.
According to the Organizing Committee, the seminar was jointly organized by UD-DUT, led by the Faculty of Civil Engineering, in collaboration with JICA Vietnam, Okuyama Boring Co., Ltd., Synspective Inc., OSASI/Osashi Technos, the I-STAR Research Group, and other partners from Japan and Vietnam.

The participating experts emphasized that climate change and increasingly frequent extreme rainfall and flooding events have significantly heightened the risks of landslides and rockfalls, posing major challenges to transportation infrastructure projects, urban development, and community safety.
For Da Nang City, where many areas such as the Son Tra Peninsula and Hai Van Pass feature mountainous and coastal terrain, effective monitoring and early warning systems are essential. The seminar highlighted the importance of integrating complementary technologies, including satellite-based SAR/InSAR, LiDAR, in-situ sensors, GIS mapping, and artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen landslide monitoring and disaster risk management.

Integrated monitoring solutions enable authorities to move beyond conventional post-disaster site inspections toward large-scale, continuous surveillance. Such systems help identify priority areas requiring detailed investigation, strategically deploy monitoring equipment, and support proactive disaster prevention and mitigation measures.

During the seminar, participants presented and discussed several in-depth technical reports, including:
1- Slope Hazard Diagnosis and Risk Assessment, Monitoring and Early Warning Systems, and Emergency Response Solutions presented by Dr. Suzuki Satoshi, expert from Okuyama Boring Co., Ltd.
2- Case Studies on Landslide Deformation Analysis and Slip Surface Estimation Using UAV-based LiDAR Data presented by Dr. Hayashi Kazunari, expert from Okuyama Boring Co., Ltd.
3- Overview and Research Directions on Artificial Intelligence Methods for Landslide Detection and Susceptibility Assessment, presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Hoang Nam, Head of the I-STAR Research Group, UD-DUT. The presentation focused on AI models that convert monitoring data into hazard maps, priority monitoring locations, warning thresholds, and practical engineering solutions.
4- Development of Landslide and Rockfall Hazard Zonation Maps for Hoang Sa Road, Son Tra Peninsula, presented by M.Sc. Huynh Vo Duyen Anh from the University of Danang - University of Technology and Education (UD-UTE).

Earlier, as part of the series of events celebrating the 50th anniversary of education and research in the field of Civil Engineering, UD-DUT also organized the forum "Transportation Infrastructure Technology: From Practical Needs to Implementation Solutions." The forum brought together scientists, experts, representatives of government agencies, infrastructure investors, project management boards, consulting and construction companies, alumni, and students.
The forum featured presentations introducing advanced technologies and practical engineering solutions for transportation infrastructure, including computational analysis and design of cable-stayed and suspension bridges, soil–structure interaction modelling, shared research data platforms, Building Information Modeling (BIM) for infrastructure projects, and intelligent structural health monitoring technologies in accordance with national standards.

Through these academic activities, UD-DUT continues to strengthen collaboration among universities, researchers, industry partners, and international organizations. These activities demonstrate the University's commitment to addressing pressing real-world challenges while promoting technological innovation and knowledge exchange. These efforts contribute meaningfully to socio-economic development in key sectors such as transportation infrastructure, disaster risk reduction, and climate change adaptation.
