Recently, member universities of the University of Danang (UD) and UD’s affiliated units such as: University of Science and Education, University of Foreign Language Studies, Campus in Kontum... have organized many practical and meaningful activities for Lao and Cambodian students studying at UD, due to the COVID-19 pandemic they could not be able to return home to celebrate the traditional Bunpimay New Year and Chol Chnam Thmay New Year.

On April 11, University of Science and Education-UD held a cultural exchange program connecting friendship between nearly 150 Lao students and Vietnamese students.

In a warm and joyful atmosphere, Lao and Vietnamese students happily danced Lam Vong, enjoyed the wrist-tie ritual, raised pungent wine cups and excitedly experienced the traditional water splash culture ritual of Lao people together to welcome New Year and pray for good things.

In particular, the culinary cultural exchange was an opportunity for lecturers and friends to gather to enjoy the dishes of the traditional cultural identity of the "country of millions of elephants".

“This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we could not return home to celebrate the New Year with our family. However, the University took care and organized this Festival, which made us warm, we enjoyed the traditional Bunpimay New Year with Vietnamese lecturers and friends." - Student Zơ Râm Kim Đào shared.

Lao student-Phoutsavath Silavongsa expressed, “This is the first time I have celebrated New Year away from home, although it is not as complete as in Laos, the festival at University has brought a warm and meaningful New Year atmosphere… Each Lao student must also have the same feeling as me, alleviate homesickness by being together with each other and with Vietnamese friends"...

“This is an annual activity that contributes to strengthening the friendship and solidarity relationship, especially in the Vietnamese-Laos tradition. Through this festival, the University would like to bring not only joy to Lao students so that they feel assured to study and practice but also an opportunity for Vietnamese students to experience and learn about the unique traditional culture of Laos.”, said Ms. Le Sao Mai, President of the Student Association of the University of Science and Education - UD.

On April 11, at the International Student Dormitory of University of Economics-UD, representatives of leaders and lecturers of the Department of Student Affairs, Department of Science and International Cooperation and Faculty of International Studies – the University Foreign Language Studies, University of Economics-UD had a friendly meeting with all Lao students on the occasion of the traditional Bunpimay New Year.

Lao students, and Vietnamese lectures and students excitedly enjoyed the traditional dishes of Laos, which were prepared to cook and served meticulously through the ingenuity of the Lao students.

“The program is really an opportunity for the Lao students of the two universities to integrate and connect with Vietnamese students. Lecturers and the Dormitory Management Board are very interested, creating conditions for us to have moments of living like in our home country.” The representative of Lao students at University of Foreign Language Studies-UD shared.

On April 11, UD’s Campus in Kontum in collaboration with Kon Tum Provincial People's Committee and Kon Tum Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia Friendship Association held the traditional Bunpimay New Year and Chol Chnam Thmay New Year for Lao and Cambodian students studying at the campus.

“This is an annual activity of UD’s Campus in Kontum, a reliable and reputable campus with experience and potential in training for Lao and Cambodian students. Over the past time, the campus has cooperated with agencies, departments and branches of the province to pay special attention and share to help the Lao students overcome difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This program is an opportunity for foreign students to interact with the Vietnamese students, share the joy of celebrating New Year like in their own homeland”, MA. Nguyen To Nhu – Vice Director of UD’s Campus in Kontum said.

Representatives of Lao and Cambodia students attending the Festival expressed their thanks for the attention of the University and local leaders. “Although we are far away from home and cannot be with family and relatives, we are very happy and touched to receive the kind attention and sharings from staff and lecturers of the university and the locality by organizing the New Year activities. I always consider Vietnam as the second home, the university is a common home of the community with nearly 300 international students…”, said foreign student Philavanh Tonik – a student of K19 class of Information Technology.
