Building an Advanced Institute of Science and Technology

Always with the desire to bring Vietnamese science to the international level, after returning to Vietnam, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Tan Hung was appointed as Vice Dean, in charge of the University of Danang the Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (UD-AIST). The UD-AIST was established in August 2020 as a breakthrough policy of UD’s leaders with the expectation of developing into an excellent research institute in the whole country, on a par with the region through scientific research, technology development and innovation to meet international standards.

At the same time, UD-AIST is the focal point of UD to organize research activities and technology transfer, serve the community at national and international level, implement interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research projects and topics in order to solve important socio-economic issues of the locality and region.

According to Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Tan Hung, UD-AIST has developed 8 interdisciplinary research groups in various fields from economy, society-humanities to science and technology; with the participation of more than 150 national and international scientists inside and outside UD, including: human potential research and development group; disaster risk research and construction infrastructure safety control group; economic behavior and sustainable transport research group; environmental health research group; computational science and engineering research group; information and communication network technology research group; spectroscopy research group; smart materials research group; computational materials science group.

Through the process of operation, the research groups of UD-AIST have proposed more than 100 scientific and technological topics, schemes and projects at national, ministerial, provincial and local levels and other topics related to bilateral and multilateral international cooperation.

Assoc.Prof.Dr Nguyen Tan Hung said that the research groups of UD-AIST included many young scientists who are passionate about scientific research, enthusiastic and eager to devote, dynamic, creative, and intellectually focused to research topics that are meaningful, topical and highly applicable to society. These are very valuable qualities that research groups at UD-AIST have when the role of science and technology in socio-economic development is increasing, social pressure is increasing, with the need to put scientific research into real life.

In the coming time, UD-AIST will focus on priority research directions for the fourth industrial revolution, high-tech technologies and products serving digital government and smart cities such as information technology and communication, automation technology, intelligent transportation-sustainable construction and new materials technology. Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Tan Hung and the research group

of the project were granted a U.S. Patent

The first research work of UD was granted an intellectual protection patent by the U.S.

With continuous efforts in the research process, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Tan Hung and his partner Dr. Le Thai Son have just completed the project of Vingroup Innovation Fund "Intelligent optical communication for extremely large data networks" which was granted a patent by the USPTO (USA) – the United States Patent and Trademark Office after more than a year of registration.

According to Assoc.Prof.Dr. Hung, this was one of two U.S. patent files registered by the project group in 2021. The main protected contents were device configurations, control systems and communication protocols for intelligent, flexible, highly integrated receiver systems with low-cost optical transmitters. With the patent granted for protection, the project group would move to the R&D stage (research and development) to develop a commercial product "smart optical transceiver" in the near future for the telecommunications industry; for a better serve broadband applications such as high-speed video/ television, cloud computing, big data, etc. of the Internet in the future.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Tan Hung shared: “The world is connected through information highways built on optical fibers with a diameter as thin as a human hair. Fiber optic communication is considered the infrastructure of today's internet. However, the rapid increasing in the number of users and broadband applications has pushed the data traffic in the internet networks to a critical point and will soon become overloaded in the near future. Therefore, it is necessary to have a breakthrough solution to increase capacity on transmission networks to meet the increasing information needs of people”.

Assoc.Prof.Dr. Hung added that the goal of the project is to design and develop an intelligent optical communication system with extremely large data transmission capacity of many terabits per second (1012 bits/s). In order to achieve this goal, the project has developed techniques to detect and correct the factors that degrade system quality, including linear and nonlinear signal distortions, thereby helping the system to improve performance exceed the nonlinear Shannon limits on information transmission capacity.

In this project, the research group has achieved excellent results compared to the original explanation such as publications in leading journals and conferences in the field of fiber optic communication, training support for 3 Fellow Ph.D. In particular, the group has experimentally established data transmission capacity of up to 1200Gb/s (equivalent to a transmission rate of 255 DVDs per second) with spectral efficiency of 5.25 bit/s/Hz using only direct wave detection technique.

With his outstanding contributions, Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Tan Hung was honored to receive the Certificate of Merit from the Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee for prestigious international scientific articles in 2017 and 2020; the Award of "Excellent Science and Technology Activities" in the academic years 2015/2016, 2016/2017, 2018/2019…
