Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thanh Bac, Vice President of the University of Danang (UD), said that combining Russia’s strengths in science and technology with the training and research capabilities of Vietnamese universities would open up greater opportunities for cooperation.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thanh Bac, the State visit to the Russian Federation by General Secretary and President To Lam and his spouse has opened up new opportunities to promote scientific research cooperation in strategic fields between Vietnam and Russia.

Speaking to a Vietnam News Agency (VNA) correspondent in Russia, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thanh Bac expressed his confidence that the outcomes of the visit would create a favorable foundation for higher education institutions in the two countries to expand their cooperation in a more substantive, practical, and effective manner.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thanh Bac emphasized that Vietnam-Russia relations are characterized by a high level of mutual trust, built on the foundation of a comprehensive strategic partnership and have consistently received attention and priority from the Party and State leaders. This provides favorable conditions for Vietnamese higher education institutions to expand research cooperation with Russian partners.

UD is currently promoting cooperation with a number of Russian educational and research institutions, including Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU), an important university in Russia’s Far East, which recently hosted activities within the framework of the Eastern Economic Forum.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thanh Bac said that the agreements reached during this visit would facilitate the expansion of cooperation between higher education institutions of the two countries in a more substantive, practical, and effective manner, thereby contributing to the implementation of policies and orientations for the development of education, training, and scientific research.

Regarding potential areas of cooperation, the Vice President of UD said that the two sides should prioritize strategically important fields such as nuclear energy, high technology, big data, artificial intelligence (AI), railway technology, and financial technology (fintech).

Notably, Vietnam’s implementation of plans to establish an International Financial Center in Da Nang could open up a new avenue for cooperation with FEFU. This comes in the context of Vladivostok, where FEFU is based, also being selected as a proposed location for Russia’s international financial center. According to Dr. Le Thanh Bac, this provides a basis for the two sides to explore suitable cooperation models in finance, financial technology, and human resource development.

Drawing on his many years of study and research in engineering in Russia, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Thanh Bac noted that Russia has outstanding strengths in nuclear physics and the peaceful application of nuclear technology. In particular, the research and development of small modular nuclear reactors has attracted growing interest in many countries.

According to him, the peaceful use of nuclear energy could become an important area of cooperation, creating opportunities for UD as well as leading Vietnamese universities to strengthen research, training, and human resource development in this field.

In addition, biotechnology and biomedical technology have also been identified as promising areas of cooperation. These are fields in which the University of Danang has developed significant strengths, with a focus on training and research, developing laboratory systems, and building a highly qualified workforce.
